It is Europe's best-selling mid-size SUV because it gets nothing wrong: 4.68 metres still fits car parks yet carries five people and their luggage, the 520-litre boot becomes 1,520 with the seats folded, and the rear bench slides to prioritise legroom or load space. The quattro system here is permanent rather than on-demand, so it tackles snow and light gravel with genuine confidence. The in-house comparison is the GLC: the Audi is more understated with better interiors, the Mercedes more comfortable over bumps. The base 35 TDI is enough for normal use and economical; the 367 hp SQ5 exists but is a niche. It is not an exciting car to drive — tall, filtered, predictable — and that is exactly what its buyers ask for.
