It has the classic front-engined sports car proportions: a very long bonnet, the cabin pushed rearward and the twin-turbo V8 mounted behind the front axle for balance. It is the exact opposite of a Porsche 911, which is rear-engined, more compact and more surgical: the AMG GT is bigger, more theatrical, and favours brute thrust and sound over millimetric precision. The V8, hand-built by a single technician who signs the plaque on the engine, is the heart of the purchase: the noise at start-up and on downshifts is part of the product. Against the previous generation it gains two rear seats, usable only by children or luggage. Day to day it demands care: it is wide, rear visibility is poor and the large wheels suffer over potholes.
