Porsche Cayenne
When it launched in 2002 it was seen as a betrayal; today it is the model that funds Stuttgart's sports cars and the benchmark for SUVs that actually handle. Despite nearly five metres and over two tonnes, it changes direction with an alacrity its dimensions do not suggest, thanks to air suspension and active anti-roll bars. The 739 hp Turbo E-Hybrid is the most powerful road-going Porsche short of the supercars: it accelerates like a pure sports car while carrying five people and their luggage. It is the Macan's big brother: more rear space, a larger boot and greater motorway comfort, but bulkier in town and twenty thousand euros more. Factor in high consumption on the petrol versions and an options list that can add tens of thousands.
