Volvo XC90

It is the only car in our range with seven genuine seats, and that is the main reason people buy it: the third row is reachable without contortions and takes adults on short journeys or children for entire trips, which many so-called seven-seaters do not allow. The second reason is safety: Volvo invented the three-point seatbelt and gave it to the world unpatented, and the XC90 continues that tradition with a boron steel shell and systems that intervene before impact. The Scandinavian interior, with natural wood and recycled wool, is warmer and less technological than German rivals' — a matter of taste. It is not, however, a sporting car: it is heavy, the 455 hp T8 does not invite you to press on, and with seven aboard the boot shrinks to 302 litres, barely more than a supermini's.
